Michigan News is the central media relations office at the University of Michigan. Staffed mostly by former journalists, the office is organized on a beat system, much like a traditional newsroom. Michigan News writers promote faculty research, expertise and engagement, as well as major events, announcements and programs to enhance the university’s reputation around the world.

Our news writers collaborate with representatives in U-M’s 19 schools and colleges to cover research regarding public health, artificial intelligence, the global economy, the environment, politics, the arts, engineering advancements, and more. Michigan News also connects reporters on tight deadlines with experts who can comment on breaking news and timely topics. The team pitches and places faculty and administrative leaders into mainstream news organizations worldwide, as well as local, state and regional outlets. And as the media landscape continues to evolve, Michigan News targets the audience where it lives, from Reddit to Substack and everywhere in between. International staff translate relevant content into Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages, and pitch to global media representatives in their native tongues.

We provide media training to faculty members seeking to share their research and other expertise with the public. The team conducts mock interviews on camera and provides other support as needed.

Our Michigan News Studio, which hosts the “Michigan Minds” podcast, offers state-of-the-art audio and video recording equipment. The multimedia staff produces and distributes videos for editorial, promotional, and social media purposes (including vertical video) across multiple platforms.
