Bassist Will Austin and his band, the George Benson Quintet, played at The Bird of Paradise Jan. 29 as part of the MLK event ‘Jazz and Detroit: The City and its African-American Music Heritage.’ The evening’s lecturers, Lars Bjorn, U-M-Dearborn professor of sociology, and Jim Gallert, veteran jazz broadcaster, had previously interviewed Austin for their book, ‘Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit 1920-1960.’ The event was sponsored by the Institute for Social Research.
