Broadway construction to begin soon

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Reconstruction of the Broadway Street bridges over the Huron River and railroad, a project that could take up to two years and begin as early as next week, will require a number of alternate routes.

One in-bound (toward downtown) lane of traffic will be maintained at all times throughout the construction project. All out-bound traffic will be detoured via Huron Street to Glen Avenue/Fuller Road. All detour routes are two-way thoroughfares. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained.

Other alternate routes to cross the river and travel north and east include: Geddes or Washtenaw avenues to Huron Parkway, and N. Main Street to M-14 East. The most significant delays in travel are expected in the afternoon from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the suggested detour route along Huron Street and Glen Avenue.
Alterations will be made to aid traffic flow on Huron Street, including a new traffic light at Fletcher. The Huron intersection with Glen will be altered to permit two lanes of eastbound Huron traffic to turn left and follow Glen/Fuller to destinations north and east. Depot and Carey Streets are expected to experience temporary closures during the construction period.

Public meeting open houses will be conducted by the city of Ann Arbor to share more information about the project. They are scheduled for:
• Jan. 28, 4-7 p.m., Ann Arbor Fire Hall, 111 N. Fifth Ave., in the second floor conference room
• Feb. 4, 3-7 p.m., MCHC Auditorium, Room F2305, Mott Children’s Hospital
The city and its contractor have established a Web site, http://www.broadwaybridges.org, that answers common questions and contains maps of the detour. As the project gets underway, the site will provide construction related updates.
