Baier and Jim Kosteva, director of community relations, accepted awards for the rehabilitation of the Perry School and the preservation of Lane Hall. The awards are given by the Ann Arbor Historic District Commission. Lane Hall, which was named the Preservation Project of the Year for 2001, opened in 1917 and, through the years, served as a religious meeting place and hub of international studies programs. In 1999, the renovation of the 18,000-square-foot building and the construction of a 9,000-square-foot addition began. It is the home of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s Studies Program. The Perry School, at 330 Packard, was built in 1902 as an elementary school. U-M acquired it in 1965. An extensive renovation project began in 2000, and the Board of Regents recently approved an addition to house various research programs for the Institute for Social Research. U-M received the award for efficiency achieved in the power plant, which uses 18 percent less fuel than comparable on-site thermal generation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 85,000 tons and nitrogen oxide emissions by 120 tons, while saving enough natural gas to heat 17,000 homes.
