Environmental issues are among the most contentious problems facing the society because they affect everyone in a fundamental way, says Mike Leavitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “I believe we have made a substantial amount of progress environmentally in the last 30 years, and we’re ready to make a major leap forward,” he said in a discussion with students at U-M-Dearborn Jan. 29. Leavitt discussed his environmental philosophy with students in the “Introduction to Environmental Science” class, taught by biology Professor John Riebesell. Leavitt, former governor of Utah who was sworn in as EPA administrator in November, was in the Detroit area to discuss the administration’s proposals for clean-up efforts in the Great Lakes.
