Appointments
President Mary Sue Coleman has appointed six new senior fellows to the Michigan Society of Fellows. The following faculty members will serve four-year terms beginning in September: Susan Alcock, the John H. D’Arms Collegiate Professor of Classical Archaeology and Classics; James Ferrara, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases and internal medicine; Susan Juster, associate professor of history; Alexander Potts, professor and chair of the Department of the History of Art; George Steinmetz, professor of sociology and Germanic languages and literatures; and Charles Yocum, professor of chemistry and molecular, cellular and developmental biology.
Awards
Hashim Al-Hashimi
, assistant professor of chemistry and assistant research scientist in the Biophysics Research Division, is among 25 recipients of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards for 2004-05. Al-Hashimi received the grant in the category of life sciences for his research project entitled “Structural Genomics of RNA using RDC-NMR: Residues Neighboring Bulge Motifs.”

The Alliance for Lupus Research has awarded a $500,000 grant to Gary Glick, the Werner E. Bachmann Collegiate Professor of Chemistry and professor of biological chemistry, to design and synthesize compounds chemically related to Bz-423—a new compound Glick discovered that proved effective in treatment of kidney disease in mouse models of human lupus—with properties for use in human testing.

James Murdock, assistant dean for finance and planning at the Business School, will receive the 2004 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of College and University Planning (SCUP) July 18 at the organization’s 39th annual conference in Toronto. A member of SCUP since 1987, Murdock served as treasurer and on the board of directors from 1994-97. |
