Elementary students in a Detroit metro-area school use Professor Elliot Soloway’s Palm applications. Soloway is one of the inventors who will participate in the Office of Technology Transfer’s annual Celebrate Invention event. People interested in attending the event scheduled for 3-6 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Michigan League Ballroom should pre-register with Cassandra Moing at camoing@umich.edu. Soloway, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the College of Engineering, and a professor in the School of Education and the School of Information, will be at the GoKnow Inc. kiosk, discussing the development of learner-centered software for low-cost, handheld, mobile computers—from PDAs to cell phones—for K-12 students. Other inventions on display relate to the Microflow Cytometer; the phospholipase A2 enzyme; the MiSo* Michigan Solar House; Molecular Research Imaging Inc.; the PHSCN peptide; extraction of 3D anatomical models from medical scan data; and diagnosis of kidney disorders.
