The association honored Bass with its most prestigious award, the Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in January in San Antonio.

Recognizing distinguished years of service to the mathematics community, the association saluted his decades of work, including considerable contributions to the field of algebra, years of research, and his leadership on several boards, including serving as editor of 11 journals and book series.

The association said his “service to the mathematics community is legendary” and praised him for “playing a vital role in bringing the insights of a mathematician to mathematics educators and the insights of a mathematics educator to mathematicians.”

The award included a cash award of $4,000.
