Award

Dr. James Ashton-Miller, the Albert Schultz Collegiate Research Professor and distinguished research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Biomedical Engineering, and a research professor at the Institute of Gerontology in the Department of Internal Medicine, was honored in August with the Borelli Award by the American Society of Biomechanics. This is the most prestigious honor given by the society and recognizes outstanding career accomplishments. Ashton-Miller’s early work addressed spine biomechanics, more specifically the pathomechanics of idiopathic scoliosis, low back and neck pain. His recent work has combined computer simulations and experiments to obtain insights into the mechanisms underlying unintentional injuries.

Elected

Maxwell Owusu, professor of anthropology, recently was elected to serve a second five-year term on the executive committee of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnolocigal Sciences at the 16th World Congress at Yunnan University, China. Members endorse a commitment to the preservation and promotion of cultural diversity, the realization of common prosperity and the creation of a harmonious world order.
