This week in history (32 years ago)On March 29, 1978, students, faculty and staff jammed the doorways and lined the hallways outside a packed Rackham Auditorium, to hear author Joyce Carol Oates read from her work. Dressed in a subdued pink turtleneck, black wide-belted skirt and matching round-toe flats, she told the assemblage, “I try to create characters that people can identify with. … Fiction is a divine form.” Have a special memory of the Michigan Union, or of a standout speaker on campus?
