Al Abrams, Motown Records national promotion director during the company’s 1964-66 glory years, is on hand for a presentation and signing of his book “Hype & Sou!: Behind the Scenes at Motown,” from 3-5 p.m. Nov. 22.

On May 30, 1959, he became the first employee of what was to become Berry Gordy Jr.’s Motown Record Corp. Working originally as national promotion director, he later became the company’s director of public relations.

After leaving Motown, Abrams worked with Stax-Volt Records, Invictus, and worked for former Supreme Flo Ballard, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and others.

The book features Abrams’ press releases, and photographs from his personal archive, preserved at the Bentley.

Indian American Cultural Show returns

“Rivayaat: Rediscovering Our Roots” is the theme for the 24th annual Indian American Student Association cultural show that seeks to bring the Indian culture and tradition to life.

The show, at 7 p.m. Friday at Hill Auditorium, has grown from a little-known event held in East Quad Dormitory Theatre to what organizers say is the largest student-run cultural show on the continent. Proceeds traditionally are donated to an Indian charity. This year, proceeds will be going to Each One Teach One, a nonprofit organization that supports underprivileged children in India, supports teachers and schools, and promotes general education.

Students, families and local metro-Detroit citizens are welcome to enjoy the night of Indian culture and diversity.
