Students returning from service in World War I pushed enrollment in September 1919 to 8,560. This taxed available housing and available classrooms. Yet only 30 turned out for football, and the Michigan Daily “was as distraught as Coach (Fielding) Yost.” Meanwhile, about 40 percent of the students worked part-time to pay expenses. The new Michigan Union building was nearly finished.
