The University of Michigan is ranked as the world’s 17th top institution, according to global rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

In its second year, the Best Global Universities Ranking increased the number of institutions on its list to 750 universities from 57 different countries, compared with 500 universities last year.

The publication also changed its methodology related to publications and total citations.

The rankings weigh factors that measure a university’s global and regional reputation, academic research performance and data on faculty and doctoral graduates.

Among U.S. public institutions, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Washington and University of California, Los Angeles were ranked above U-M.
