Obituary — Lori Jean Mirabitur
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague and cherished friend, Lori Jean Mirabitur, who died peacefully on May 22, 2025, at the age of 63.
Lori joined the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology in 2002, recruited by then-chair Doug Engel. Over the next two decades, Lori served as the chair’s administrative partner, working closely with chairs Doug Engel and Pierre Coulombe, and with interim chairs Deb Gumucio and Kristen Verhey.

Lori became a steady center in the department. Her deep knowledge of the institution, unwavering attentiveness and commitment to others had a lasting impact on both the function and spirit of the department. She was known for anticipating needs, navigating complex situations with empathy and clarity, and ensuring that every individual felt seen, supported and equipped to succeed.
Lori played a central role in the recruitment of many of the department’s current faculty, managing the intricacies of hiring while offering the warmth and hospitality that helped new colleagues and their families feel immediately at home. Lori also oversaw the administrative side of faculty promotions, ensuring these efforts moved forward smoothly and with integrity.
Lori celebrated our milestones, supported us through challenges, and always asked about our families — not out of formality, but because she sincerely cared. Her genuine concern for others complemented her professionalism, making her instrumental not only to the department’s day-to-day function but also to its long-term growth, stability and community spirit.
While Lori accomplished much in her career, she is most fondly remembered for the way she made others feel. She had a gift for remembering names, faces and the smallest details — gestures that made people feel truly valued. Lori retired in 2023, leaving a legacy defined not only by her professional excellence but by the many lives she touched with kindness and heart.
Lori was deeply devoted to her family, sharing more than 30 loving years with her husband, Ed Mirabitur. She was a proud and loving mother to Brittney (Luigi) Spadafora and Timothy (Shayna) Longeway, and a doting grandmother to Timothy Jr., Hudson, and Ella — the absolute joys of her life. Lori would light up when she spoke about her grandchildren. Whether it was reading stories, planning special outings or simply enjoying their laughter, these moments brought her immeasurable happiness. Her love for her family was the center of her world.
Just as she nurtured her family, Lori had a rare gift for forming deep and lasting friendships. With her warm personality, she drew people in and was surrounded by a vast circle of devoted friends — colleagues, neighbors and loved ones — who were uplifted by her generous spirit and steady support.
Lori also had a deep love for animals and the outdoors. She found peace in her garden, joy in quiet moments by the lake and renewal in trips “up north” with those she loved most.
Lori’s grace, thoughtfulness, quiet strength and sense of style left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. While her presence is profoundly missed, her legacy endures — in the department she helped shape, in the friendships she nurtured, and most enduringly, in the deep love she poured into her family.
Our hearts are with Lori’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
