University of Michigan faculty and staff will have an opportunity to talk to representatives from university departments and local organizations, get financial questions answered and learn about university and community resources at a Financial Well-being Resource Fair on Aug. 7.

The fair will take place from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. at the University Hospital Towsley Lobby.

Financial stress remains a widespread concern. According to the American Heart Association, 82% of American adults are stressed about money. Like other types of stress, financial worries can impact physical and mental health, sleep, relationships and work performance.

“Taking charge of your financial well-being is a powerful step toward strengthening your overall personal well-being,” said Bri Carpenter, social determinants of health program manager for MHealthy. “When you have clarity and feel more secure about your finances, you are better able to thrive physically and mentally in other aspects of your life.”

Recognizing the ways financial stress can impact overall well-being, MHealthy launched the fair last year.

New this year is a series of mini-talks in the Towsley Auditorium between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. These 10- to 15-minute expert-led sessions will address some common financial concerns, including debt management, saving for college and responding to IRS correspondence.

The fair will also feature experts available to discuss:

  • Budgeting
  • Home buying
  • Saving/saving for college
  • Identity theft and financial fraud prevention
  • Retirement planning
  • Financial counseling and assistance

Participating organizations at this year’s fair include Fidelity Investments, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Huntington Bank, the MHealthy Resource Coach Program, Michigan Education Savings Program, Michigan Education Trust, State of Michigan Student Aid, TIAA, Washtenaw Intermediate School District (My Future Fund), U-M Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, U-M Credit Union, and others.

U-M Credit Union will hold a drawing for a chance to win one of five $50 Amazon gift cards.

Anyone in need of accommodations to participate can email Leola Hearing at leoladh@umich.edu.
