What to expect around campus during Ann Arbor Art Fair

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Ann Arbor Art Fair, which takes place July 17-19, is once again expected to bring more than 400,000 visitors to the heart of the city, including Central Campus. While the fair is a celebration of art and culture, it also brings changes to the day-to-day rhythms and logistics of campus.

Pre-event setup for the art fair will begin as early as July 15, and the U-M community should plan ahead for temporary adjustments to parking, transportation and deliveries on and around campus.

To prioritize the safety of attendees and the broader campus community, this year’s fair includes enhanced safety protocols that are part of coordinated planning efforts between the city of Ann Arbor, the Division of Public Safety and Security, and event organizers.

These proactive measures are designed to help everyone navigate the fair with ease while ensuring the event remains enjoyable and secure for all.

What to expect during the Art Fair:

  • Enhanced safety measures, including additional barriers, will be implemented for all attendees.
  • Sidewalk traffic changes will affect pedestrian routes, so plan accordingly.
  • U-M Transportation services will be on detour; see below for specific details.
  • Central Campus food and procurement deliveries will be impacted. During the fair, high traffic volumes can prevent drivers from reaching their destinations and some deliveries may not arrive. To minimize disruptions, plan procurement orders in advance, and limit food deliveries destined for Central Campus buildings.

For a smooth experience:

  • Review anticipated changes related to the fair and adjust your schedule as needed.
  • Give extra time for travel to account for potential delays.
  • Walk for food pick-ups and explore the fair.
  • Prepare for increased foot and vehicle traffic, which may cause delays.
  • Respect barricades, law enforcement and fair staff to help maintain safety and order.

How parking and transportation will be impacted:

  • U-M parking structures will be gated and require gate-appropriate U-M permits for access, with these exceptions.
    • Special event parking will be sold after 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday at Thompson, Thayer and Fletcher Structures. The Church and Hill Structures will offer event parking after 8 a.m. Saturday.
    • Parking in C5 and C10 will be unavailable due to the closure of South University.
  • Due to construction on South State Street, the Commuter North and Commuter South will continue to be on detour. Regular service will resume this fall, once construction has completed. Please see the Transit Alerts page for additional information.
  • Round-trip shuttle services to the fair and free parking are available at Briarwood Mall and Huron High School.
  • Enjoy convenient travel around the fair with the Art-Go-Round shuttle, which is free, air-conditioned and wheelchair-accessible.
