UM-Flint announces Innovation & Technology Phase 2 plans
The Board of Regents approved $40 million for Phase 2 of a new learning complex for the College of Innovation & Technology at UM-Flint.
Plans for the 40,000‑square‑foot building include programs in clean energy, emerging mobility, additive manufacturing, robotics, AI, immersive experience and data visualization.
UM-Flint is expanding its offerings to attract talent, spark collaboration, foster translational research and prepare students for technology‑driven careers.
One notable highlight of the design is an open concept “mega lab” that will be subdivided into research and instructional spaces, enabling cross‑program interaction and interdisciplinary projects. The building will also feature general lecture classrooms, a flexible space for student demonstrations and events, several small huddle rooms, additional collaboration zones, and faculty and administrative offices.
If approved, the state legislature will contribute approximately $30 million to the project, with UM-Flint funding the remainder through its own resources. Though not physically connected to the adjacent 14,000‑square‑foot Phase 1 building, scheduled to open in 2026, the two structures will be linked by walkways and shared outdoor spaces, creating a unified complex that supports experiential learning and workforce development.
Expected to open in 2028, Phase 2 builds on CIT’s existing infrastructure, adding state‑of‑the‑art instructional labs to meet the growing demand for talent development for Michigan’s expanding technology sector.
