The University Record, July 19 , 1999 From the Office of the Vice President for Research
Recipients of grants under the Distinguished Faculty and Graduate Student Seminars Program have been announced by Earl Lewis, dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and Fawwaz Ulaby, vice president for research.
The program is designed to enhance the intellectual climate for faculty and graduate student scholarship by sponsoring special seminars, colloquia and distinguished visitor events. “The opportunity for faculty and graduate students to spend time exploring topics of mutual interest—often with the benefit of interaction with renowned scholars from other institutions—has proven to be an excellent means of fostering collaboration and stimulating new research,” Ulaby said.
In reviewing the applications, special attention was paid to proposals that address areas of innovative and/or emerging interdisciplinary scholarship, complement the development of new research centers and training programs, and serve the needs and interests of both faculty and graduate students.
Awards of $5,000–$10,000 have been made, which may be supplemented with funds from department, college or external sponsors.
