The class of 2006: Extraordinary achievers

- U-M received more than 25,000 applications for about 5,200 positions
- Some 30 percent of the class of 2006 were elected to one or more student government offices in high school
- About 25 percent of the class received all-city, league, county or state awards in athletics
- More than 50 percent of this year’s class members play a musical instrument
- More than 85 percent have participated in school or community service organizations; about 28
- percent have received awards for community service
- About 50 percent have published poems, stories or articles, or have worked as editors of their high school newspapers or yearbooks
- About 10 percent of the class members have started their own businesses
- On the SAT, 1,384 members of the class scored between 650 and 800 on the verbal portion and 2,198 scored 650 or better in math
- Among those who took the ACT, more than 1,200 had a composite score of 30 to 36; only 4 percent of students nationwide achieved that level
- There were 313 perfect scores of 36 on at least one section of the ACT, and three members of this class scored a perfect 36 on all sections
- More than 25 percent had an A average in high school; more than 60 percent had a 3.8 grade point average or higher
- In comparison with other years, the class has the largest proportion of students ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating classes—almost 90 percent
- More than 3,300 received high enough scores on Advanced Placement tests to enter U-M with college credit
- Women comprise 51 percent of the class
- Students are from 1,410 different high schools, all 50 states and more than 70 countries, joining a student body that represents more than 100 countries.
