Estimated reading time: 1 minutes
Nancy Cantor speaks Sept. 25 during the inaugural lecture bearing her name. The Nancy Cantor Distinguished Lectureship on Intellectual Diverity was created to recognize the former U-M provost, who was known as a champion of diversity during her tenure at U-M. Now the chancellor of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, Cantor addressed the variety of conditions that work against diversity in any community. She also stressed that the University does not have the option of creating the perfect environment for diversity in a sheltered cocoon, but that diversity depends on being connected and not separate.
