University responds to anticipated reduction in state appropriation

Budget actions

• The vice president for research will eliminate $200,000 for early support for new research initiatives and faculty awards and grants. The School of Dentistry will reduce departmental pilot research programs by $150,000.

• The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning (TCAUP) is consolidating seven curricular concentrations into five, and reducing the number of curricular concentrations in its Ph.D. program from four to three.

• Capital spending programs and building maintenance have been slowed or postponed by TCAUP, the Business School and the Law School.

• Recreational sports will eliminate, postpone or transfer to non-operating funds all major equipment purchases.

• Reduction of printing costs will include eliminating the printing of the time schedule, decreasing the size of Michigan Engineer magazine and reducing the print publication of Michigan Today from three to two editions annually.

• Both the Business School and School of Education are increasing teaching loads for some faculty, following a review of faculty activity and productivity.

• In addition to the Energy Star Programs savings of $9.7 million annually, the School of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, University Library and TCAUP will reduce utility costs by adjusting thermostats or reducing building hours.
