Fawwaz Ulaby, who has served as vice president for research since 1999, has been named vice president for research and University Distinguished Professor at Purdue University. The appointment is effective by Sept. 1, pending approval by the Purdue Board of Trustees.

Ulaby—the R. Jamison and Betty Williams Professor of Engineering and a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at U-M—joined the University in 1984. He was director of the U-M-based NASA Center for Space Terahertz Technology from 1988-99.

He earned a doctoral degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968 and a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1964 from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

His research experience has focused on satellite remote sensing, radar systems, and microwave sensors for automotive and environmental applications.
