Don’t miss: String instruments contribution to jazz celebrated
The program “Swinging Strings with special guest James Dapogny” at 12:10 p.m. Feb. 28 will celebrate the sometimes overlooked contributions of bass, guitar and violin to jazz.
The performance is presented by the U-M Health System Gifts of Art program in the University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1.
The trio Swinging Strings features Kurt Krahnke on bass, Rod McDonald on guitar and Paul Winder on violin and viola. The trio takes on works by some of the great jazz violinists, particularly Joe Venuti and his guitarist sidekick Eddie Lang.
The group also will perform music from the rich jazz traditions of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, by artists and composers including Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington.
Joining the group on piano is “honorary String” James Dapogny, to help Swinging Strings swing even harder.
