Don’t miss: Rockin’ to Balinese gamelan music
Balinese “touch” guitarist I Wayan Balawan is featured in a performance from 8-9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the U-M Museum of Art Frankel Wing Lobby at the U-M Museum of Art (UMMA).
The free public concert is part of the UMMA’s monthly Jazz Series. Balawan will perform with two gamelan musicians from his band Batuan Ethnic Fusion, I Nyoman Suwida and I Nyoman Suarsana, and with Olmon Piedra and Adam Meinerding from Bowling Green University.
Batuan Ethnic Fusion combines traditional Balinese gamelan instrumentation — including drums, gongs, bamboo flutes, xylophones, stringed instruments and vocals with jazz. The group’s sound showcases Balawan’s skill as a guitarist, particularly his speed and ability to play double-neck guitar, and the eight fingers touch style he developed, also known as touch-tapping.
The style has been compared to piano playing, as Balawan performs the chords and bass with the left hand, and the melody with the right hand.
This monthly series, curated by Associate Professor of Music Adam Unsworth, presents artists in an intimate setting. This performance is sponsored by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the Center for World Performance Studies, UMMA, and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
