Inducted

Philip J. Deloria, LSA associate dean, was inducted into honorary membership of the Alpha of Michigan chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at its 2011 induction ceremony April 10 at Rackham Amphitheatre. In delivering a keynote address, Deloria, a professor of history, spoke about the moment he realized what it actually means to be an historian. Presiding over the ceremony was chapter President Timothy McKay, Thurnau Professor of Physics and Astronomy and director of the LSA Honors Program.

Named

Zhen Qian, senior software developer with Information and Technology Services, has been named a Sakai Fellow for 2011. Sakai is the open-source foundation for the higher education community that is the basis for CTools. The Sakai Fellows program seeks to foster community leadership and contributions by recognizing and supporting active contributors worldwide. Zhen has developed tools that are being used at the university and around the world.

School of Dentistry researcher Dr. Peter Ma, the Richard Kingery Endowed Collegiate Professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences, has been named one of the world’s Top 100 Materials Scientists, and the only one from a dental school worldwide. Ma was ranked 76th among the world’s top materials scientists whose published research papers were among the most frequently cited by peer researchers worldwide between 2000-2010.

Charles Doering, professor in the Department of Mathematics, was among 34 academics and professionals recently named to the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics 2011 Class of Fellows for outstanding contributions to applied mathematics and computational science through research. He was cited for his work to expand understanding of phenomena in nonlinear and stochastic dynamical systems, turbulent transport and mixing.
