The U-M Health System will open the doors to its new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital this November.
New lives will begin in a space that’s surrounded by nature, that’s designed for privacy and efficiency, and where those who face complex medical challenges will look to U-M for improved health and hope.
The hospitals will move into a 1.1 million-square-foot facility, which will provide cutting-edge specialty services to newborns, women and children. A series of events, including a public open house, will commemorate the opening of the hospital complex.
C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital public open house
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 6
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor
To commemorate the grand opening of the community’s newest resource for children’s and women’s health, families are invited to tour the new facilities and enjoy a day filled with free activities for all ages.
Families are welcome to tour the hospitals, which include a 12-story inpatient tower, nine-story clinic tower and dedicated pediatric emergency department. The Women’s Birth Center, which features 50 private, large birth and recovery rooms, also will be open to public tours.

At 3 years old, Max (above) was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a grape fruit. Through treatment at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, doctors were able to successfully remove the tumor. The story of Max’s recovery, and of others whose lives have been saved and improved by the U-M Health System, is featured in a new version of the Michigan Difference television ad. The ad premiered Sept. 3 during the opening football game against Western Michigan University. The newest spot focuses on the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, with a new building scheduled to open this fall. To view the new marketing campaign, go to www.michigandifference.org and find the new TV commercials, and the radio, newspaper and magazine ads. “There you can read about the patients, families, faculty, nurses and staff who have been featured in our campaigns and learn more about the real victors at Michigan: our patients and their families and their extraordinary journeys while in our care,” says Dave Brudon, director of marketing at UMHS.
Family-oriented activities, including a scavenger hunt, giveaways, character appearances, interactive games and demonstrations from hospital staff will be available from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There is no fee to attend the open house.
The hospitals also will host two fundraisers:
The Women’s Power Breakfast
8:30 a.m. Sept. 28
North Campus Research Complex Cafeteria, 2800 Plymouth Road, Ann Arbor
In honor of national Women’s Health and Fitness Day, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital will host a lively breakfast and panel discussion.
Moderated by journalist, author and television host Joan Lunden, the panel will discuss the importance of cervical cancer prevention and screening, as well as domestic and international women’s health issues and policies.
Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the UMHS cervical-cancer screening program.
Participating panel speakers are experts in various health-related fields, including health care research and policy, fashion design, and reproductive medicine. All are deeply involved in global efforts to improve women’s health in the developing world, actively advocating for improvements in women’s healthcare.

Creating a Masterpiece — Art and the New Mott
6-9 p.m. Nov. 1
C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor.
As part of an ongoing campaign to add works of art to its facilities, UMHS has assembled a museum-quality collection to display throughout the new children’s and women’s hospital.
To raise money for the art fund and to thank donors who have contributed toward the $1.8 million dollar collection, a gala dinner will be held in the main lobby of the hospital on Nov. 1.
The evening will include a tour of the artwork, which features works by artists with close ties the university and the Great Lakes region. VIP ticket holders also will be invited to a pre-glow reception with artists and hospital leadership.
The collection, funded entirely through private donors, features 241 individual pieces by celebrated artists, including U-M alum Michele Oka Doner, known for her public art installations, including the mile-long embedded terrazzo A Walk on the Beach at the Miami International Airport.
