Awards

Nancy Florida, director of the Islamic Studies Program and a professor of Javanese and Islamic studies, recently was presented with an award for her work in promoting Indonesian studies by Indonesian Ambassador Dino Patti Djalal. He praised Florida for the passion and dedication she brought to her study of the region’s literature, adding her work has helped Indonesians better understand their country.

Fawwaz Ulaby, Emmett Leith Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers James H. Mulligan Education Medal for contributions to undergraduate and graduate engineering education through innovative textbooks, dedicated mentoring of students and inspirational teaching. His most recent book, “Circuits,” is used at top engineering institutions in the country.

Selected

Annemarie Sullivan Palincsar and Elizabeth Moje have been selected to join the International Reading Association’s newly formed Literacy Research Panel. Sullivan Palincsar is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, the Jean and Charles R. Walgreen, Jr. Professor of Reading and Literacy, professor of education, and associate dean for Academic Affairs, School of Education; and Moje is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of education and associate dean, SoE, and faculty associate, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research. The panel will explore critical issues affecting literacy and provide leadership regarding some of the biggest issues in the field. It is charged with shaping literacy policy to help improve reading instruction.
