The College of Pharmacy, the Great Lakes Clean Water Association “Yellow Jug Old Drugs” program and the Village Apothecary Pharmacy are sponsoring a medication disposal event Thursday to help the university community dispose of unused medicines in a safe and environmentally responsible way.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, more than 60,000 children are treated in the emergency room each year after accidentally ingesting prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

Improper drug disposal can harm the environment and create the opportunity for illegal use. Pharmaceuticals have been found in the nation’s water supplies, and discarded medications can be retrieved from the trash by those who would abuse or sell them.

Faculty, staff and students can bring unused, unneeded, or expired medications to Ingalls Mall from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday for environmentally responsible and secure disposal.
