Research Universities for Michigan launches seed funding grants
RU4M seeks to support projects that address economic, environmental challenges
The University of Michigan is part of a new initiative with research institutions across the state intended to address Michigan’s pressing environmental issues and related economic challenges.
The Livable Futures – Water Collaboration Grants initiative was launched this fall by Research Universities for Michigan, or RU4M, an alliance of Michigan research universities that includes U-M, Michigan State University, Wayne State University and Michigan Technological University.

The Office of the Vice President for Research will administer the funding program that encourages research collaboration between the coalition’s four universities.
Seed grants totaling $400,000 will be awarded to up to six teams that involve collaboration across the alliance’s four universities. Proposals can request up to $20,000 per primary investigator, with a maximum of $60,000 to $80,000 and must include one primary investigator from at least three of the alliances’ institutions.
Proposals that incorporate innovative, interdisciplinary projects with community-based partners are strongly encouraged.
“This multi-university grant program will position Michigan’s research universities to serve the state of Michigan and its diverse communities on the issues that matter today,” said Shalanda H. Baker, vice provost for sustainability and climate action. “Water is the lifeblood of our economy and vital to thriving communities in the decades ahead. I’m thrilled to get this program started.”
Researchers are asked to seek innovative solutions to challenges related to the state’s future water resource management, energy needs and climate. Some examples include meeting the increased demand for potable water as cities grow, creating management strategies to protect Michigan coastlines and supporting the building of sustainable shipping, energy systems and fisheries, while protecting the ecosystem.
“Initiatives like these are powerful examples of the immense potential Michigan’s universities have to contribute to the state,” said Arthur Lupia, vice president for research and innovation.
“The seed funding and facilitation available through this program can create the foundation our researchers need to tackle society’s most pressing challenges and fuel the innovation needed to support our state’s economic growth.”
The RU4M coalition is designed to increase innovation and collaboration across Michigan’s leading research universities and create economic opportunities for local communities. The consortium is also collaborating on initiatives focused on showcasing Michigan’s research and innovation strengths and examining how to boost the state’s national competitiveness for entrepreneurship and job creation.
The submission deadline is Dec.1, 2025.
“This initiative is about preparing Michigan not just to respond to climate challenges, but to lead in building livable futures for our communities,” said Britany Affolter-Caine, RU4M executive director, in a press release announcing the program. “By combining the strengths of our state’s top research institutions, we can develop solutions that safeguard our resources, strengthen our economy, and improve lives.”
